Your British Airways Flight is on Fire ~ What Would You Do?

“This is your Captain speaking – please would all passengers evacuate the aircraft”

That fear inducing phrase is surely every flyers worst nightmare isn’t it?

… and I for one can tell you, I would not be mucking about – in fact I’d probably be shouting “Women & children first” whilst hurriedly shepherding my family to the nearest available exit.

But disasters and fires (or snakes) on planes only ever happen to other people, or in Hollywood blockbusters don’t they?

Or do they?!

I was more than a little alarmed this week when my husband (who’s a self confessed plane spotting geek) informed me that we’d actually flown in the very same British Airways BA2276 Boeing 777-200 which caught fire when trying to take off in Las Vegas earlier this week.

British Airways Boeing 777-200

May 2014: On our jolly holidays destined to Walt Disney World Resort via Orlando International Airport (MCO)

This revelation was a little too close for comfort for me.

In fact it really made me think about all the media attention some of the passengers on this stricken BA flight have received about rescuing their possessions before evacuating the aircraft and reaching the relative safety of the runway.

What would you do – get out ASAP or reach for your flight bag?

Check out this link to see how many passengers did grab their bags first.

It’s a split second choice and one (thank goodness) not many of us have ever experienced or even rehearsed before.

Thanks to the pilot’s quick thinking and skill plus the aircrews professionalism all 172 passengers and crew survived to tell the tale.

As I said earlier I’m pretty sure I’d be off that flying sardine tin and down that escape shoot quicker than you can say Jiminy Cricket.

So here’s a totally hypothetical question –

Your home is on fire, your family and pets are all safe and the fire-brigade has been called – what’s the one thing you would rescue if you could?

It’s such a cliche, but I think I’d grab my iPhone!

Let me know in the comments what you’d grab in flash – if you suddenly had to dash!

Thank you for linking up with #anythinggoes linky with Blogging Mummy. I am publishing a post later this week about our Virgin flight that had to return back to Gatwick as an emergency landing. I wont go into details here however I can imagine just how scared these people were. I would probably pass out with panic. It something no one ever wants to experience however things do happen don’t they? x

I wouldnt need to grab my phone as according to my boyfriend it’s surgically attached to me 😉 how scary must it be though to hear those words?!

Scary to think isin’t it! I would probably grab my Mac and all my memory sticks, as it has all my photos of my family. It is a tough one though. But saying that all my memories so far are on the internet now! I don’t really have anything else which I feel attached to. xx

I’ve been discussing this with friends this week who work for BA. Can’t believe that people took hand luggage and stuff with them! What were they thinking grab you’re kids, friends and just go, everything else is replaceable. The aircraft was clearly on fire and full of fuel it hadn’t even taken off.
Also taking items down the emergency slide could 1) rip it preventing other people getting off safely or 2) cause injury to others. Sorry rant over! #picknmix

I’m like you, I’d grab my phone. It’s got photos, appointments etc in it, but it is generally next to me so shoving it in a pocket would be automatic. I’d love to take my big camera, my laptop and my external hard drive with all my pictures on it. I really should upload all my more recent ones onto the cloud as well because my dropbox is full at the moment.

Oh what a scary thought! I really try not to think about all of the plane disasters when I’m flying. I remind myself that flying is safer than driving. I hope my instinct would be to grab the kids & run off, leaving the bags! If I could save one item it’d be my iPhone as well – my entire life & blog is on there so it’d be top priority if everyone was safe. x

Oh gosh, I’m actually not sure what I’d do. I think I probably would grab my handluggage if it was under my seat or right by me, but I’d leave it if it was in the overhead locker.

This gave me goosebumps! I cannot believe the total stupidity of people collecting their hand luggage! Id have my family off their double quick.

I read some comments yesterday from some stupid people who suggested they wouldn’t leave behind their luggage in case someone stole it. Luggage or your life? errr… moronic people.

Ive been in a fire before and i’ll tell you now, you wont be stopping to pick up anything – its a scary scary time xx
