By complete accident this past weekend I discovered a new summer tradition for my family –
The Great Summer Clear-out!
It all started with a ‘What shall we do today?’ – which as some parents will identify – can indeed be a terrifying question!
As in my previous article Do the Summer Holidays make you want to hide? at this point I would usually retreat into the pantry for some me time with just the biscuit tin for company until such time as someone else has made a fun suggestion and they’ve all argued the toss on what to do…
And what exciting family adventure did my husband decree for us… to clear out the garage and take the rubbish to our local tip or to give it its posh name – The Household Waste and Recycling Centre.
Oh deep joy, I think I’ll spend the day with the biscuits thank you very much.
However, being a total control freak I couldn’t resist being part of our Great Summer Clear-out; all be it in a supervisory role and I must admit, we did all actually enjoy ourselves!
I especially loved arriving at the tip, car fully laden to bursting with all our useless, unwanted gear & junk and the very best bit was chucking it into the various skips for recycling – the sound of breaking glass is amazingly cathartic!
The feeling of driving home unburdened was pretty good too…
Finding your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre is easy via a simple Google search, by checking out GOV.UK or over the phone from your local Council Authority.
Did you know that currently there’s no charge for householders (non business) taking waste to the dump and that most items are recycled wherever possible.
Plus if you have usable items that you no longer need, like furniture or white goods you can donate them to charity shops or projects like RE:SOURCE where they can be up-cycled and go on to be useful to other families.
Summer Clear-out is a fantastic way to get the family working together as a team and is also a clever way to engage children into recycling and helping others.
Best of all… it’s FREE! and as all my friends will tell you, free is my favourite price.
Try it out and perhaps let me know what you think by leaving a comment below.
